30 Days of Thankfulness - #9

I am thankful for this backyard.

This backyard has been in my family for 50 years. It is my favorite yard in all the world. It is safe and secure and crammed full of wonderful memories.

Originally, this lot had been the town's croquet court and everyone in town would come to play a riveting game of croquet and sip sarsaparillas. Or something like that.

And when my grandparents bought the lot, they found a house in the country, loaded it on a truck and made the old croquet court its backyard. And so it has been for half a century.

Now...well, now this yard is known for it's die-hard games of nerf football.

This is serious business, folks. It's not for the weak of heart. Or weak anywhere, for that matter.

You are sure to get a couple of bruises. Maybe a scrape or two...

Maybe even a punch in the gut. You know, when no one is looking.

In 1986, in a very heated, late-night football game between the cousins, one of my top two teeth was knocked out.

By my own brother.

We are talking serious commitment to the game, my friends.

This ain't no pansy croquet.

But not matter what happens, no matter who hits who, what gets broken, punched, knocked-out, sprained, strained, bruised or inflamed, we still come back to this yard and play all over again.

And we all wear mouth guards.

  1. Oh, the games of kickball, and the sleepouts in the yard, and the sandbox, and the breakfasts on the backporch! This may be the best piece of real-esate in the world.

    There's no place like home.
